Determining if new and existing racks are compatible

Procedure

  1. Determine the model of Rack-1 and the expansion rack being installed. The model number is on the machine type and model serial number (MTMS) label. The MTMS label  1  is on the front cover above the door latch release. See Figure 1.
Figure 1. Rack serial number and rack number labels (Models 98x, 8xE)
Note: Rack-4 and Rack-5 not shown. Some models do not use a Rack-3.
Rack serial number and rack number labels (Models 98x)
  2. Use the following table to find the condition that applies.
Table 1. Type and model of Rack-1 and expansion rack to install
Type and model of Rack-1 Type and model of expansion rack to install Action
    283x-980 283x-98B Continue to step 3.
283x-980 Other than 283x-98B Stop the installation. See Note 1.
    283x-981 283x-98E Continue to step 3.
283x-981 Other than 283x-98E Stop the installation. See Note 1.
    283x-982 283x-98F Continue to step 3.
283x-982 Other than 283x-98F Stop the installation. See Note 1.
    Other than 283x-980 or 981

    Other than 283x-980, 981, or 982

Any Stop the installation. See Note 1.
Note 1: These instructions can be used to install a 283x-98B expansion rack to a 283x-980 storage facility, or a 283x-98E expansion rack to a 283x-981 storage facility, or a 283x-98F expansion rack to a 283x-982 storage facility. Refer to the correct expansion rack installation instructions for your model, or contact your next level of support.
  3. In the expansion rack you are installing, observe the Rack number label  2 . See Figure 1.
Note: The Rack number label defines the rack position for this rack in the storage facility. The intra-rack cables and cable destination labels for each rack position are unique. The expansion rack must be installed in the correct position.
    • For model 98B Rack-2, go to step 4.
    • For model 98E Rack-2, go to step 5.
    • For model 98F Rack-2, go to step 6.
    • For Rack-3, Rack-4, or Rack-5, go to step 7.
  4. You are installing model 98B Rack-2. At the rear of Rack-1, observe the P1-C6 slots in both CEC enclosures.

Do both CEC enclosures have a PCIe two-port card in slot P1-C6?

    • Yes, go to step 8.
    • No, stop the installation. Call the next level of support. Rack-1 does not have the feature installed to support expansion racks.

  5. You are installing model 98E Rack-2. At the rear of Rack-1, observe the P1-C3 and P1-C5 slots in both CEC enclosures.

Do both CEC enclosures have a PCIe two-port card in slots P1-C3 and P1-C5?

    • Yes, go to step 8.
    • No, stop the installation. Call the next level of support. Rack-1 does not have the feature installed to support expansion racks.

Do both CEC enclosures have a PCIe two-port card in slots P1-C2 and P1-C3?
    • Yes, go to step 8.
    • No, stop the installation. Call the next level of support. Rack-1 does not have the feature installed to support expansion racks.
Figure 4. CEC enclosure location codes (rear view) (Models 982, 988)
CEC enclosure location codes (rear view) (Model 982)
  7. Does the expansion rack that you are installing (Rack-3, Rack-4, or Rack-5) have I/O enclosures near the bottom of the rack?
    • No, go to the next step.
    • Yes, stop the installation. Only Rack-1 and Rack-2 may have I/O enclosures. Contact your next level of support.
  8. Find the expansion rack that you are installing in the following list:

    • Model 98E Rack-3 (single-phase), go to step 11.
    • Model 98E Rack-4 (single-phase), go to step 12.
    • Model 98E Rack-5 (single-phase), go to step 13.
    • Model 98E Rack-2 (three-phase), go to step 14.
    • Model 98E Rack-3 (three-phase), go to step 15.
    • Model 98E Rack-4 (three-phase), go to step 16.
    • Model 98E Rack-5 (three-phase), go to step 17.

Attention: The remaining steps in this section only apply to model 98B expansion racks.

  1. Determine whether the existing racks have the correct storage enclosures and DA cards to support the new rack. Refer to Table 11, Figure 15, and Figure 16.
