MAP2150 Storage facility will not power on from zSeries host

When the zSeries remote power feature is installed, the first rack contains a ZLR type of Local / Remote switch card. The DIP switch located on each RPC card will have switch 3 set to the on (right) position. A failure that disables the remote power control can be internal or external to the storage facility. An interface wrap tool has been provided to enable the MAP to isolate the failure at ZLR local remote switch card.

Before you begin

You must determine the following:
  • The feature is properly installed.
  • zSeries feature switch is set to on (right) position on both RPC logic cards.
  • All cable connections are correct.
  • The ZLR local remote switch card switch is set to Remote.
  • The management console is available and the power control mode at the management console is set to zSeries remote.

About this task

While the Local / Remote switch is set to Remote and the management console has enabled the zSeries power control mode, the storage facility is powered on and off from the attached zSeries hosts. A power on for the storage facility will be initiated when the first power control interface asserts the +Pick signal. When the +Pick signal is received by either rack power control card from the zSeries local remote switch card, a storage facility power on will be initiated.

Before you begin

Procedure

  1. Ensure the zSeries local remote switch card switch is in the Remote position.
  2. At the management console (HMC), set the Power Control Mode to zSeries Power Mode.
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility.
    2. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Storage Facility Power Control.
    3. Select the zSeries Power Mode.
  3. Disconnect all remote host power control cables from the zSeries local remote switch card.
  4. Test each of the four remote power control cable connector on the zSeries local remote switch card. Connect the remote power control wrap plug to a connector.
Note: The wrap plug simulates pick and hold signals from a remote host system.
    1. After all four connectors have been tested, find the condition that applies:
      • The storage facility powers on with the wrap plug in all four connectors. The failure is external to the storage facility. Continue the isolation with the remote power control cables or the remote hosts.
      • The storage facility did power on for at least one connector, but not all four connectors. Go to step 5.
      • The storage facility did not power on with the wrap plug installed in any plug location. Go to step 6.
  5. The failure is the zSeries local remote switch card. Do the following to replace that FRU:
    1. Set the zSeries local remote switch card switch to the Local position.
    2. Ensure that the storage facility is fully powered on.
    3. Deactivate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    4. Replace the zSeries local remote switch card using the procedure, Exchange the local remote or zSeries local remote switch card. Then return here and continue.
    5. Activate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    6. To verify the repair, go to MAP2150 Section-2.
  6. The storage facility failed to power on with the remote power wrap plug installed in any remote power control cable connector cable position. Replace each of the following FRUs in the order listed until the problem is resolved.
Note: Before replacing any FRU, ensure the Local/Remote switch is in the Local position and the storage facility is powered on. Following the replacement of each FRU, go to MAP2150 Section-2 to verify that the original failure has been repaired.
    1. RPC Card 1 - use the replace FRU utility to replace RPC1.
    2. RPC Card 2 - use the replace FRU utility to replace RPC2.
    3. zSeries Local Remote Switch Card
      1. Set the Local/Remote Switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure the storage facility is fully powered on.
      3. Deactivate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
      4. Replace the ZLR card.
      5. Activate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    4. RPC card 1 to zSeries local remote switch card cable.
      1. Set the Local/Remote Switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure the system is fully powered on.
      3. Deactivate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
      4. Replace the RPC card 1 to zSeries local remote switch card cable.
      5. Activate RPC1 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    5. RPC card 2 to zSeries local remote switch card cable.
      1. Set the Local/Remote Switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure the system is fully powered on.
      3. Deactivate RPC2 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
      4. Replace the RPC card 2 to zSeries local remote switch card cable.
      5. Activate RPC2 from the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.

MAP2150 Section-2

Use this section to verify the remote power control interface.

Procedure

  1. Install the remote power wrap plug into the first power control cable connector on the zSeries local remote switch card.
  2. Set the Local/Remote switch to the Remote position.
  3. From the management console, set the remote power control to Remote Power. Does the storage facility stay powered on?
    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, the connector is failing. Return to the beginning of this MAP.
  4. Set the Local/Remote Switch to the Local position.
  5. Have all four connectors been tested?
    • Yes, return to the step that sent you here.
    • No, remove the remote power wrap plug from the current connector and install it in the next connector. Then go to MAP2150 Section-2, step 2.
