MAP2160 Power system Identify LED failure

A rack or FRU Identify LED can fail to light or be lit when a repair is not active.

About this task

The storage facility power system has an Identify LED on most FRUs. The power system FRUs that do not have supporting Identify LEDs are the battery backup, primary power supply (PPS) fans and all cable assemblies. An Identify LED is set to flashing when that FRU is to be replaced. When the Identify LED for a power system FRU is set to flashing the controlling source will also set the Rack Identify LED to flashing.

MAP2160 Section-2

About this task

Rack Identify LED is off and should be flashing. The rack Identify LED is set to flashing while any power system FRU Identify LED is set to flashing. If a FRU Identify LED is flashing and the rack Identify LED for that rack is not flashing, one of the FRUs in the steps that follow is failing.

Procedure

  1. Ensure cables to the FRUs in the following steps are properly connected and then replace the following FRUs until the Rack Identify LED lights.
  2. Replace the Local Remote Switch card.
    1. To deactivate rack power control (RPC) card 1, use Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    2. Replace the local remote switch card using the procedures in Exchange the local remote or zSeries local remote switch card.
    3. To activate RPC1, use Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
  3. Replace the Rack Identify LED source.
    1. Refer to Table 2. Locate the source for the Identify signal for the FRU with the flashing Identify LED. Use the replace FRU option to replace the FRU.
  4. Replace the cable between Rack Identify source and cpLRcard. Locate the source for the Identify signal for the FRU with the flashing Identify LED and the cable signal.
    1. To deactivate the FRU that is the source for the Identify signal, use Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.
    2. Replace the signal cable listed in the same row as the Identify signal source.
    3. To activate the FRU that is shown as the utility source, use Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources.

sssssss in the location indicates the serial number of the rack.

MAP2160 Section-3

The Identify LED is blinking and should be off. Each FRU Identify LED is driven by a source external to the FRU that contains the LED. When the Identify LED is flashing, a failure is indicated. A failure at the source that drives the LED is indicated because the source provides the flash timing function.

Procedure

Replace the FRU that is listed in the table as the source of the LED indicator.

MAP2160 Section-4

The FRU Identify LED is lit and should be off. Each Identify LED is driven by a source external to the FRU that contains the LED. If a repair action is not being taken for the FRU, the LED should be off. It the LED is on solid, a failure is indicated. When the LED is on solid, the failure can be at the source of control, the FRU that contains the LED of the cable that connects the two.

Procedure

Replace each of the FRUs in the following order until the LED is off.
  1. FRU with failing Identify LED.
  2. FRU that provides Identify LED control.
  3. Cable that connects the above two FRUs if applicable.

MAP2160 Section-5

The LED does not light.

About this task

When an Identify LED fails to flash during the repair process, you need to complete the repair for the original problem and then determine if the Identify LED is still failing.

Procedure

  1. Complete the repair for the original problem and then determine if the Identify LED is still failing.
  2. After you complete the repair, use the replace FRU option and perform a logical FRU replacement for the FRU that had the failing Identify LED.
  3. If the Identify LED fails to flash while you replace the FRU, replace the source for the failing Identify LED or the cable that provides the signal.
Note: Refer to Table 2. The 'x' in the table indicates the rack that contains the failing Identify LED and 'ssssss' in the location is the serial number of the rack.
