The backup function saves the management console data that is stored on the management console hard disk to DVD or LPAR boot drives, depending on LIC bundle level.

About this task

The archived data is used only with a reinstallation of the management console from the product CDs. For information about how to reinstall the management console:

Complete the following steps to back up the management console.

Procedure

  1. Is the HMC at LIC Bundle VRMF 64.2.xx.xx or later?
    • Yes, the HMC and Storage Facility Critical Data is saved to all CEC LPAR boot drives. Go to step 7.
    • No, the HMC critical console backup data is saved to a DVD disc. Go to the next step.
  2. Locate the critical console data backup DVD disc for each HMC on this storage complex. The DVD disc is included in the ship group during an installation or kept in the HMC DVD-RAM drive after installation.
    There are two versions of the DVD disc:
    • The newer version is labeled with the HMC machine type model S/N and "HMC Critical Console Data Backup DVD, Keep in HMC DVD-RAM drive." If you have this version, go to step 5.
    • The older version has no preprinted label. It has the HMC machine type model S/N hand-printed by the service representative. If you have this version, go to the next step.
  3. Is the HMC machine type model and S/N printed on the DVD disc?
    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, hand print the HMC machine type model and S/N and "HMC Critical Console Data" on the DVD disc. For example: HMC machine type model S/N: 8837-PLM 75KKTWT8R, HMC Critical Console Data. Go to the next step.
  4. Complete the following steps to back up critical console data on each HMC for this storage complex. Use the DVD disc with the HMC machine type model S/N for this HMC.
    Note: It can take up to three hours for this process to complete. Once the backup is started, continue on to the next step.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management.
    2. In the right work area, go to the Operations section. Click Back up HMC Data.
      The Back up HMC Data window opens.
    3. Select Back up to media on local system and click Next..
    4. Select DVD-RAM and click OK.
    5. Insert a formatted DVD-RAM media into the drive.
    6. Enter a description for the archive data.
    7. Click OK to store your critical console data on the DVD-RAM.
    8. Leave the HMC Critical Console Data backup DVD in the HMC DVD-RAM drive. It is automatically updated once a week.
  5. Did the backup complete successfully?
    • Yes, exit this MAP and return to the procedure that sent you here.
    • No, go to the next step.
  6. Did you get a Platform Management Error for ensuring that the media is inserted correctly?
    • Yes, the DVD media might not be formatted yet. Return to the HMC Management (Operations section) and click Format Media, then select Format DVD-RAM, then select Backup/restore and click Format. When the format is complete, return to step 4 of this MAP.
    • No, contact your next level of support.
  7. Complete the following steps to back up HMC and Storage Facility Critical Data for each HMC managing this storage complex. The process fails only when it cannot successfully write the information to at least one CEC LPAR boot drive.
    1. Start the Backup Critical Data task:
      • In the Service interface:
        1. From the navigation area click HMC Management.
        2. In the right work area, go to the Storage Server HMC Tasks.
        3. Click Backup Critical Data.
      • In the DS8000 storage management GUI system area, click Service > HMC Management > Backup Critical Data.
    2. A progress screen is displayed. Wait for the Backup data process completed successfully status to display, and then click OK.
    3. Exit this MAP and return to the procedure that sent you here.
