Before you begin

Icon for electrostatic discharge wrist strapUse approved ESD procedures to prevent damage.

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the laptop tray cable bundle

Procedure

  1. This procedure is disruptive to customer access of the management console. The management console must be shutdown, if it is not already powered off.
    1. If this storage facility has a second management console, the customer will be able to manage their data on this storage facility.
    2. Ensure the customer is aware of the above.
    3. The procedure to shutdown the laptop, replace the cable bundle and then bring the laptop operational can take 60 to 90 minutes.
  2. Shutdown the management console. Refer to MAP6640 Shutting down, restarting, and logging off the management console.
  3. At the rear of the rack, locate the PJA to laptop power cable to be replaced. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. The cable is a Y cable that has three connectors; PJA E41-J8, PJA E42-J8, and laptop power input. See Figure 3. The power cable is part of a cable bundle that passes through the management console cable management arm to and the laptop. The entire bundle must be replaced. The bundle contains all cables that connect directly to the laptop.
  4. Disconnect the power cable from the J8 connector on PJA E41 and PJA E42. See Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3.

  5. At the laptop unit, disconnect the power and communication cables.
    1. For T520 and T530 management consoles, disconnect the following (see Figure 4):
      • Power Callout label 5
      • Left side, upper USB for eth0 black private network Callout label 1
      • Left side, lower USB for eth3 gray private network Callout label 2
      • Rear USB for modem Callout label 3
      • eth2 customer network Callout label 4
    2. For T540 management consoles, disconnect the following (see Figure 5 and Figure 6):
      • power Callout label 2 (Figure 5)
      • power-on card power near Callout label 2 (Figure 5)
      • left side, front USB for eth0 black private network Callout label 7 (Figure 5)
      • left side, rear USB for eth3 gray private network Callout label 6 (Figure 5)
      • right side, rear USB for modem Callout label 6 (Figure 6)
      • eth2 customer network Callout label 1 (Figure 5)

  7. Remove the cable retention hardware as needed and pull the cable bundle to the rear of the rack.
  8. Disconnect the remaining cables in the bundle and then remove the bundle from the rack.

Install the laptop tray cable bundle

Procedure

  1. Route the cable bundle through the cable management arm. Allow some slack in the cable so it is not pulled tight when the cable management arm is flexed.
  2. Connect all ends of the cable bundle at the rear of the rack.
  3. Connect the gray USB cable to the USB Ethernet adapter Callout label 1 with the gray Ethernet cable connected to it. See Figure 7.
  4. Connect the black USB cable to the USB Ethernet adapter Callout label 2 with the black Ethernet cable connected to it. See Figure 7.
  5. Route the cable bundle around the laptop and then connect all cables to the laptop.
  6. The laptop should automatically power on and after several minutes display the login screen. Login, display and repair any new open serviceable events related to the laptop.
  7. To verify the black and gray private networks, refer to MAP7001 Using the network topology tool.
  8. To test the modem and customer network connections, refer to Testing management console communications.
  9. Ensure the customer can access the management console.
  10. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
