MAP6070 HMC boot stops with NIC problem

About this task

During the boot up of the management console various checks are made to ensure that the Ethernet ports are functional. The customer and private network connections use predefined Ethernet ports. The boot is not allowed to proceed if those ports are found to be missing or an incorrect Ethernet card is found to be installed.

    ********************************************
    !!!   UNSUPPORTED CONFIGURATION !!!
    ********************************************
The HMC has (1, 2, or 3) Ethernet ports installed on the system. This is NOT a SUPPORTED configuration. The HMC only supports 4 Ethernet ports configuration. This must be fixed in order for the HMC to boot.
Did you see one of the other messages listed on a previous boot-up attempt?
    • Yes, follow the actions listed for the previous message.
    • No, continue with step 2.

    !!!   UNSUPPORTED NIC PCI   !!!
    **********************************************
The NIC installed on the system is NOT Supported. Check the hardware manual for supported NIC PCI. The unsupported NIC needs to be replaced with the correct NIC in order for the HMC to boot.
    1. It appears that an unsupported NIC PCI (Ethernet) card is installed in the HMC. If you just replaced the PCI Ethernet card, then verify that you ordered and installed the correct part.
    2. If you did not just install a new PCI Ethernet card, then do that now.a, b

    2. In the manual, see the information regarding customer replaceable units.
    3. In the manual, see the information regarding system board.
  2. At the rear of the management console server, observe the LEDs to determine the link status of the Ethernet ports. See Figure 1 (X335 server) or Figure 2 (X336 server) or Figure 3 (X3550 server).

    1. Find a working port (indicated by a Link Status LED that is on solid or is flashing) and move the Ethernet cable to test any ports that appear to be failing.
    2. Replace the PCI Ethernet card or HMC planar as appropriate for any failing ports. Refer to the appropriate manual that is on the IBM DS8000 series Service Documents CDROM:
      • xSeries 335 Type 8676, Type 8830 Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide
