MAP6550 DVD RAM Drive Problem

Use this procedure to test the DVD drive in the PC for the management console.

MAP6550 Section-1

Procedure

  1. Clean the media disk as follows:
    1. Hold the disk by its edges. Do not touch the surface.
    2. Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints from the surface. Wipe the media disk from the center to the outside.
    3. Reinsert the media disk, with the label-side facing up. Continue with the next step.
  2. Retry the failing task using the original media. Does the failure occur again?
    • Yes, go to step 3.
    • No, this ends the procedure.
  3. Restart the management console and then retry the failing task. Does the failure occur again?
    • Yes, go to step 4.
    • No, this ends the procedure.
  4. Leave the original media in the drive. Test the DVD-RAM drive using the information in MAP6530 Testing the management console. Select Extended, then DVD-RAM Drive. When the test is complete, return here and continue with the next step.
  5. Did the DVD-RAM test fail while testing with the original media?
    • Yes, continue with the next step.
    • No, the failure is no longer occurring. This ends the procedure.
  6. Exchange the original media with a new one.
    Note: If you are replacing DVD-RAM media, the new media must be formatted. If possible, use another management console to format. Refer to MAP65B0 Format a DVD-RAM disc for backup/restore.
    1. Repeat the DVD-RAM drive test.
    2. Select DVD-RAM Drive problem area.
  7. Did the DVD-RAM test fail while testing with the new media?
    • Yes, continue with the next step.
    • No, the original media was defective. This ends the procedure.
  8. Verify the following:
    1. All DVD-RAM drive data and power cables are secure (x335, x336, and x3550 eServer only).
    2. The DVD-RAM drive is jumpered as Master and is cabled to the Secondary IDE Bus (x335, x336, and x3550 eServer only).
    3. The DVD-RAM drive is seated properly in the laptop management console (laptop only).
    4. The external DVD-RAM drive is connected to the USB port on the front of the management console, and the USB cable is seated securely on the back of the external DVD drive (Model 98x management console only).
  9. If the diagnostics continue to fail, exchange the DVD-RAM drive. When complete, run the DVD-RAM test again.
    Note: If there are any jumpers or tab settings on the new drive, ensure that they have the same settings as the old drive.
  10. Did the DVD-RAM drive test continue to fail?
    • Yes, continue with the next step.
    • No, the original DVD-RAM drive was defective. This ends the procedure.
  11. Continue exchanging FRUs from the FRU list and running the DVD-RAM drive tests.
    Note: The DVD-RAM drive is a high probability FRU.
    • If the FRUs fix the problem. This ends the procedure.
    • If you cannot isolate the problem, contact your next level of support.
