Exchange the storage enclosure midplane

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the storage enclosure from the rack

Before you begin

Notes:
  • Ensure that you have been directed here by a management console guided FRU replacement procedure. The FC-AL fabric for this and the directly associated storage enclosures must be in the proper state to protect the customer from data loss.
  • This procedure requires an 8 mm socket wrench.

Procedure

  1. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  2. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  3. At the rear of the storage enclosure, remove both power supplies.
    1. As each power supply is removed, note which power supply is in each location so they can be reinstalled in the same location.
    2. For vertical mount storage enclosures (locations B01, B02, B03, B04), loosen the top clamp screws and slide clamp up. See Figure 1.
    3. Disconnect both power input cables. See Figure 2.
    4. Push the orange retaining clip towards the black pull handle, and pull the power supply straight out from the enclosure. See Figure 3.

    Note: Models 98x do not have the vertical enclosure option.

  4. IMPORTANT: Each flash drive and RAID controller card MUST BE INSTALLED IN THE SAME EXACT POSITION in the new storage enclosure after the midplane is replaced.
    Warning: If the flash drives are swapped between slots, customer data is not accessible and might be lost.
  5. At the rear of the storage enclosure, remove both RAID controller cards.
    1. As each RAID controller card is removed, note which RAID controller is in each location so they can be reinstalled in the same location.
    2. Disconnect both PCIe cables. See Figure 2.
    3. Open the release lever Callout label A. See Figure 4.
    4. Support both sides of the RAID controller card Callout label B while you slide it out of the enclosure.

  6. At the front of the rack, remove each flash drive or slot baffle from the storage enclosure and set in a safe place.
    Important: You must ensure that each one is plugged in the same position in the new storage enclosure. It is recommended that you write down the serial number and position of each part before removing them. See Figure 5.
    1. Remove the bezels Callout label 1.
    2. Gently press the latch Callout label 2 to release the drive handle.
    3. Pull the handle Callout label 3 out and up or to the right. This action partly ejects the drive out of its slot.
    4. Gently slide the drive straight out of the slot.

  7. At the front of the rack, remove the two screws that fasten the storage enclosure chassis to the rack mount rails and then remove the storage enclosure from the rack.

Remove the midplane from the storage enclosure

Procedure

  1. Turn the enclosure upside down and place the enclosure on a flat surface.

  2. Using the correct size Torx bit or driver, remove the 10 screws from the bottom of the enclosure that are closest to the front of the enclosure.

  3. Turn the enclosure topside up.

  4. Remove the 19 screws that secure the top front cover to the enclosure.

  5. Remove the top front cover.
  6. Remove the two screws on the right side of the enclosure and the two screws on the left side of the enclosure that secure the flash drive rails to the enclosure.

  7. Remove all seven flash drive rails.
    Note: The EMC springs on the flash drive rails can be easily bent. Avoid touching the EMC springs when handling the flash drive rails.

  8. Remove the seven screws that secure the midplane to the enclosure. Do not remove the two screws at the center that attach the midplane to its underplate assembly; the screws are identified in the following figure.

  9. Lift the midplane slightly and pull it forward to remove it from the enclosure.

Install the midplane into the storage enclosure

About this task

To install a midplane, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Install the new midplane, ensuring that the alignment pins are properly seated. When seating the midplane on the alignment pins, do not slide the midplane past the alignment pins in the direction of the rear of the chassis.
    Attention: Sliding the midplane past the alignment pins might result in damage to the midplane.

  2. Secure the midplane assembly to the enclosure by using the seven screws that you removed in step 8 in the Remove the midplane from the storage enclosure section.

  3. Secure the two flash drive end rails to the enclosure by using two screws on the right side of the enclosure and two screws on the left side of the enclosure that you removed in step 6 in the Remove the midplane from the storage enclosure section.
    Notes:
    • The flash drive end rail on the left side of the enclosure has drive identification numbers. The flash drive end rail on the right side of the enclosure does not have drive identification numbers.
    • The EMC springs on the flash drive rails can be easily bent. Avoid touching the EMC springs when handling the flash drive rails.
  4. Place the remaining five flash drive rails into position, ensuring that the alignment pins on the bottom of each flash drive rail are properly seated in the enclosure.
    Note: Ensure that the flash drive rails are positioned so that the drive location numbers are in ascending order from left to right.

  5. Secure the top front cover to the enclosure by using the 19 screws that you removed in step 4 in the Remove the midplane from the storage enclosure section. Leave these screws slightly loose for easier alignment when you secure the bottom screws.

  6. Turn the enclosure upside down.

  7. Secure the flash drive rails to the enclosure by using the 10 screws that you removed in step 2 in the Remove the midplane from the storage enclosure section. Ensure that the alignment pins on the bottom of each flash drive rail are properly seated in the enclosure.

  8. Turn the enclosure topside up and tighten the top cover screws.
    Note: To ensure that the PCIe enclosure maintains its proper shape, tighten the screws closest to the center of the enclosure first. Tighten the screws toward the front of the enclosure last.

Install the storage enclosure into the rack

Procedure

  1. At the front of the rack, install the storage enclosure into the rack.
  2. Install the two screws that fasten the chassis to the rack mount rails.
  3. At the front of the rack, install each flash drive or slot baffle in its original position in the storage enclosure.
    Warning: If the flash drives are swapped between slots, customer data is not accessible and might be lost.
    1. Before installing the flash drive or slot baffle, open the drive handle by pressing the latch and pulling the handle open. See Figure 5.
    2. Hold the drive upright as you place it into the slot in the storage enclosure. The arrow on the latch points down (vertical mount) or to the left (horizontal mount).
    3. Gently slide the drive fully into the slot. The drive stops before it is fully seated. See Figure 5.
    4. Gently push the drive handle in until it is latched closed.
    5. Verify that the front of the new drive is aligned with the other drives.
    6. After all drives or slot baffles are installed, install the bezels.
  4. At the rear of the rack, install both RAID controller cards.
    1. Ensure that the release lever on the new RAID controller card is in the open position.
    2. Rotate each RAID controller so the release lever hinge is at the top (vertical mount) or towards the left (horizontal mount). See Figure 4.
    3. Gently slide the RAID controller card into the enclosure until it stops.
    4. Push the release lever to the closed position.
    5. Reconnect the PCIe cable.
  5. At the rear of the rack, install both power supplies.
    1. Rotate each power supply so the orange retaining clip is at the bottom (vertical mount) or towards the right (horizontal mount). See Figure 3.
    2. Slide each power supply into the storage enclosure and ensure the orange retaining clip seats fully.
    3. Gently pull the power supply handle to ensure it is fully seated and latched.
    4. Connect each power cable to the power supply.
  6. Exit this parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
