Exchange the DC-UPS fan assembly

  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the DC-UPS fan assembly

Procedure

  1. Open the left rear cover. Remove the two screws Callout label 1 that secure the right rear cover (trained service personnel access area only).
    Open the right rear cover. (Figure 1)
    Note: The screws must be reinstalled when the cover is closed to prevent customer access.

  2. Unfasten Callout label 1 and then rotate all six power distribution units (PDUs) away from the rear of the rack.

  3. Use two PDU service tools to hold the PDUs in the open position. (Figure 3 and Figure 4).
    1. The PDU service brackets are stored in the Rack-1 front upper left documents enclosure.
    2. The upper three PDUs swing out as a group because they are held together by a removable PDU alignment bracket.
      The lower three PDUs are similar.
    3. The PDU service tool should be installed on the middle PDU of each group of three.
    4. The PDU service tool bottom tab Callout label 3 is inserted between the upper and lower PDUs.
    5. The PDU service tool fingers Callout label 1 and Callout label 2 straddle the PDU support bracket.
    6. Figure 4 shows the tool properly installed. The tool is delicate, do not put unnecessary force on the PDU group.

  4. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.

  5. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  6. At the DC-UPS DSU to be repaired, observe the J1-x Callout label 1 and J2-x Callout label 2 green LEDs. See Figure 6.

    Are one or more green LEDs lit solid?

    • Yes, continue at the next step.
    • No, you cannot continue with this procedure because it requires the DC-UPS DSU to be in the powered on state. Instead, you need to exit this procedure and do a pseudo-repair of the DC-UPS DSU FRU. When directed to replace the DC-UPS DSU FRU, do not; instead, replace the DC-UPS fan assembly. If this DC-UPS is listed as a FRU in an open serviceable event FRU list, use that to pseudo-repair the DC-UPS DSU. If not, then refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.

  7. Ensure the replacement DC-UPS fan assembly FRU is unpacked and ready to install.
  8. Disconnect the DC-UPS fan assembly cable from the J4 connector (Figure 7). Push down on the release latch at the top of the connector.

  9. Unscrew the three screws Callout label 15 (Figure 7).
  10. Remove the DC-UPS fan assembly.

Install the DC-UPS fan assembly

Procedure

  1. Install the DC-UPS fan assembly.
  2. Tighten the three screws.
  3. Connect the DC-UPS fan assembly cable to the J4 connector. Route the fan cable behind the lower handle as shown in Figure 8.

  4. Ensure that both fans are spinning normally. (You can compare them with the other DC-UPS in this rack.)
  5. Remove the upper and lower PDU service tools and return them to the document enclosure (front upper left of Rack-1).
  6. Rotate and fasten the PDUs to the closed position.
  7. Close the right rear cover and reinstall the two security screws that prevent customer access. Then, close the left rear cover.
  8. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
