Exchange the rack power control (RPC) card

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the RPC card

Procedure

  1. Open the left rear cover. Remove the two screws Callout label 1 that secure the right rear cover (trained service personnel access area only).
    Open the right rear cover. (Figure 1)
    Note: The screws must be reinstalled when the cover is closed to prevent customer access.

  2. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.

  3. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  4. Unfasten Callout label 1 and then rotate all six power distribution units (PDUs) away from the rear of the rack.

  5. Use two PDU service tools to hold the PDUs in the open position. (Figure 4 and Figure 5).
    1. The PDU service brackets are stored in the Rack-1 front upper left documents enclosure.
    2. The upper three PDUs swing out as a group because they are held together by a removable PDU alignment bracket.
      The lower three PDUs are similar.
    3. The PDU service tool should be installed on the middle PDU of each group of three.
    4. The PDU service tool bottom tab Callout label 3 is inserted between the upper and lower PDUs.
    5. The PDU service tool fingers Callout label 1 and Callout label 2 straddle the PDU support bracket.
    6. Figure 5 shows the tool properly installed. The tool is delicate, do not put unnecessary force on the PDU group.

  6. Remove the cables from the RPC card in the following order (see Figure 2):
    Attention: When handling the RPC cables, ensure that the connectors do not contact the frame or each other.
    1. Cx-J201 - DC-UPS rack (This removes all power from the RPC card. The amber Identify LED will still be blinking.)
    2. Remove all remaining cables.
  7. Loosen the two thumbscrews.
  8. Gently slide the RPC card out of its slot.
  9. If filler plugs are present in any ports of the old RPC card, remove them and install them in the same ports of the new RPC card.

Install the RPC card

Procedure

  1. Ensure the DIP switches at the bottom of the new RPC card are set the same as the RPC card that is not being replaced. For DS8000®, the DIP switches on both RPC cards are set the same. See Figure 2 for the following settings:
    • Switches 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 are set to off (left)
    • Switch 3 is set off (left) when a Local Remote card is present (remote power control feature is not installed)
    • Switch 3 is set on (right) when a zSeries Local Remote card is present (remote power control feature installed). The zSeries Local Remote card has four connectors for customer remote power control cables.
  2. Gently slide the RPC card into its slot.
  3. Tighten the two thumbscrews.
  4. Reattach the cables to the RPC card in the following order (see Figure 2):
    ATTENTION: When handling the RPC cables, ensure that the connectors do not contact the frame or each other.
    To prevent a system outage, plug each cable into the correct RPC card connector, in the order shown.
    1. Cx-J208 - RPC card to RPC card
    2. Cx-J204 - Local remote switch card
    3. Cx-J201 through Cx-J216
    4. Cx-J1 - Rack identity card (RPC Card Identify LED will blink)
    5. Cx-J4 - PJA on Ethernet tray

       

  5. Remove the upper and lower PDU service tools and return them to the document enclosure (front upper left of Rack-1).
  6. Rotate and fasten the PDUs to the closed position.
  7. Close the right rear cover and reinstall the two security screws that prevent customer access. Then close the left rear cover.
  8. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
